The following principles are the foundation of the National Framework for Microcredentials:
Microcredentials are short, focused learning experiences that provide learners with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the workplace. They are typically offered by colleges and universities, but they can also be offered by other organizations, such as businesses and non-profits. Microcredentials can be completed online or in person, and they can be used to supplement a traditional degree or to build new skills.
The Micro-credential Council of Canada (MCC), in collaboration with a number of other organizations and qualified professionals, have established a policy for a National Framework for Microcredentials. The framework provides a set of principles and guidelines that help ensure that micro-credentials are high-quality and relevant to the needs of learners and employers.
The following guidelines are intended to help organizations develop and deliver high-quality microcredentials:
Microcredentials should be designed to meet the specific needs of learners and employers. They should be aligned with industry standards and should provide learners with the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in the workplace and assist those seeking employment.
Micro-credentials should be delivered by qualified entities and have been created under the guidance of qualified professionals. Learning resources should be based on sound educational principles that have been designed to be effective for an individuals needs. Resources should be made in a format that easily accessible to learners regardless of their location.
Micro-credentials should be assessed in a way that is fair and valid. The assessment should be aligned with the learning outcomes of the micro-credential and should be designed to measure the learner’s understanding of the course. Assessments (and all resources) should prevent a “click-through” and “bot” process to assure learners are engaged.
Micro-credentials should have the ability to be verified. The verification process should be transparent and should be based on a set of clear criteria. The Micro-credential Council of Canada verifies certificates for our partners.
The National Framework for Microcredentials is a valuable resource for organizations that are developing and delivering microcredentials. The framework provides a set of principles and guidelines that can help to ensure that microcredentials are high-quality and relevant to the needs of learners and employers.
